Documents to help you along the way

There are certain documents that may help you along the way, you WONT need all of them but they are not hard to get and could come in handy at some point. Places like Medicare require multiple documents to prove things such as breaking ties from Nz, intent to reside in Australia and proof of address etc, so the more you have the better just in case something isnt adequate for them. They work on a points system which I will explain a little later.

All Documents must be originals.

  • Your Passport
  • Your sales agreement or end of lease documents from your Nz Home
  • A letter from your employer confirming cease of employment
  • A letter from your bank confirming closure of accounts (we didnt close all of ours so didnt bother with this)
  • Documentation from removal/shipping companies
  • References from landlords
  • Lending references (from financial institutions)
  • Immunisation history for children
  • Medical records are a personal choice, the Nz health system is happy to release them but if you ever move home the Australian health system are a bit funny about releasing them so you may never get them back. If there is a chance you may go home and you dont have any serious health issues I would leave them in Nz.
  • Your drivers License
  • Keep any Credit/Eftpos cards that have your name embossed on them

PLACES TO NOTIFY

You will need to contact the IRD and let them know you intend to move out of New Zealand. They will send you a form to fill out, this is reasonably important especially if you have money left at home in the bank, your tax rate will go down as you are no-longer an Nz Resident.

You will also need to stop any family assistance payments, unemployment benefits or rental assistance you are receiving, otherwise you may end up owing them a lot of money.

Make sure you clear all debt, this isnt compulsory but it makes things a lot easier, especially because international transactions are costly, it costs about $30 all up to transfer internationally so if you are having to make weekly payments on something it will end up costing you a fortune. If you have any fines owing through the courts make sure you either pay or set up an automatic payment for them, if you do not organise this you may be never let out of the country, or if you go back to Nz for a holiday and you have been sent to collections in the interim, you may not be able to leave Nz to come home again! Its something that you really DO need to sort out.
